Database Driven Website Design

When we started out in website design and development, database driven websites were not that common and most websites were static pages. Nowadays, people want to see dynamic pages.

Static vs Dynamic web pages

Typical static web pages do not change every time the page is loaded by the browser, nor do they change if a user clicks on a button. They will always look the same and the content never changes unless you load a new page or you change the page yourself and upload the new version yourself.

Dynamic pages can do the opposite, they can change every time they are loaded or with your users’ interactions (logging into a members’ area for example) without you having to make those changes for those users. A dynamic web page can personalise your users’ experience and help get your marketing message over.

So what has this got to do with a Database?

One of the most common methods of creating dynamic websites is to use a database. For example, logging into a ticket support system, the web page will grab your information only from a database and feed it to your browser. The skin of the website will not change however, only the content within it to make that content personal to you. A database is an easy system to manage your site’s content and personalise your website to your user.
